The Sunny Central Storage UP-S is SMA's utility-scale battery inverter for large storage power plants, with four models delivering 2,933 to 4,600 kVA of symmetrical charge and discharge power (at 35°C) at battery-side DC voltages of 962/1003 V up to 1500 V and DC currents up to 4,750 A. The UP-S versions allow system designs with higher output power and higher short-circuit current contribution (over 500 kA DC), matching modern 5+ MWh BESS containers in 2, 4 and 8 hour configurations.

Peak efficiency reaches 99.2%, and the OptiCool air cooling system keeps the outdoor-rated enclosure (IP54 electronics) at full performance in extreme ambient temperatures, with optional accessories reducing noise emission by more than 6 dB(A). Grid-forming and black-start readiness are available as options alongside dynamic grid support (FRT), active and reactive power setpoints, integrated battery communication and energy-management functions such as peak shaving and energy shifting — stand-alone or as a turnkey solution with SMA medium-voltage systems, compliant with CE, IEC/EN 62109-1/-2 and VDE-AR-N 4110/4120/4130.
